Stepping through the arched entrance of the Ultimo Wine Centre, you get the same feeling as you would when you walk into a contemporary gallery showcasing recent artists with a few old masters. Or if you’re a bibliophile, you feel a similar frisson as when you step inside a private library with rows of the finest bottles on display in lieu of books.
The Ultimo Wine Centre is no ordinary bottle shop. It carries an extensive collection of imported and boutique Australian wines. While it is the home of some of the finest crus from France and Italy, it is also a place that showcases the talents of newcomers. Whether it’s a Côtes du Rhône, a vintage Bordeaux, or a fine Burgundy, there is something to please wine enthusiasts and serious oeneophiles.
The UWC has been supplying some of the finest vintages since 1994. We discovered it in its early days, when it occupied a small shop with barely any elbow room, across the road from the current premises in Ultimo. Having returned from a recent trip to Europe heady with French appellations we sampled abroad, finding a place in Sydney that stocked some of France’s finest earned it a place in the Foodie Triangle. After all, being able to drink a Beaujolais Nouveau every third Thursday in November as it is celebrated in France or to sip a regional aperitif such as Pineau des Charentes half way around the world is just cause to going back for more.
Regular tastings are held on Saturdays with mostly excellent discoveries. The Annual Champagne Tasting is a popular event and a chance to sample and learn about lesser known marques. Last month, a Saké tasting was held with about eighteen different types of Saké on offer accompanied by experts to guide tasters through the range.
As the Foodie Triangle draws to a close, with fresh seafood from the Sydney Fish Market, chocolates, cheese and other gourmandises from Simon Johnson, a few coveted bottles from UWC, all that is left is to indulge the senses with a hearty bon appetit and santé!
