Le Mur des Je t’aime: Where to Say I Love You in Paris

Author: Posted on: February 14, 2010 at 11:02 am

If a stroll along the banks of the Seine, arms entwined with your chéri(e) leaves you a little lukewarm, or the idea of a marriage proposal at the height of la Tour Eiffel is a cliché best left for Hollywood flicks, Paris, the city of love can still wave its magic wand and entrap you in romance.

Le Mur des Je t’aime

Situated in Montmartre,  in Square Jehan Rictus just behind the art nouveau métro station Abbesses is Le mur des je t’aime. The 40 square metre wall is filled with the words “I love you” etched in many languages and dialects.

The brain child of artist Frédéric Baron and calligraphist Claire Kito, the wall has over 311 written declarations of love and has become a meeting place for lovers.

The tiles are said to be composed of enamelled lava resembling the sheets of paper where Baron wrote his texts. For me, it was reminiscent of a school child’s chalkboard, where the first awkward “je t’aime” are inscribed.
