Bastille Day at La Gerbe d’Or, Paddington

There’s nothing like the first swig of a rough red wine as it goes down the throat. At 10 am.

Cassoulet, red wine and baguettes have become a tradition at La Gerbe d’Or in Sydney’s suburb of Paddington. Every year, owner Franck François puts on a generous serve of food and wine for francophiles who gather outside his patisserie in celebration of Bastille Day.

Much like the 2009 Bastille Day at La Gerbe d’Or, he hosts the event on the Sunday preceding le quatorze juillet. For many years, we have made the annual pilgrimage to Paddington with friends and enjoyed the convivial ambience, French music and the hospitality of Franck. With the Sydney Morning Herald reporting La Gerbe d’Or is up for sale, we hope the tradition will continue though he would be sadly missed by many.

Merci et bon quatorze juillet!

  3. Ooh how gorgeous! I spy the St Tropez cake which we really loved. What a fun way to celebrate Bastille day! :)

    • Hi Lorraine, that St Tropez cake didn’t last too long once we took it home. C’est trop bon! :)

  4. I used to work across the road from a popular French cafe in Darlinghurst and because the boss’ wife was French we always celebrated Bastille Day. I haven’t celebrated it for about 4 years now and your photos bring back great memories. I’ll have to hunt down some French bistros and get some Bastille Day action happening!

    • Forager, it’s a lot of fun to celebrate even in Sydney. Food, wine and culture, how can we resist!
