Hotel Metropole Suisse, Lake Como: A Room with a View

Arriving at the Hotel Metropole Suisse in Lake Como, we could not be happier with our choice. The waterfront location along the shores of the lake is prettier than the photographs.

Situated on Piazza Cavour across the road from the Como ferry stop and a two minute walk to Ferrovie Nord train station, the hotel boasts a prime and central location. The lower façade was designed by the famous architect Terragni.

The hotel lobby has a modern feel and looks like it has been recently renovated. A mix of light and dark tones with a bright orange feature walls and colonnades makes you feel welcome as you step through the sliding doors. The staff appear to have a professional reserve but they are most helpful and friendly once you approach them. They switch between Italian and English with ease and make you feel welcome.

Day view from our room

Our standard double room on the first floor is accessible by a lift small enough for two people with large luggage. Much to our surprise, the room has a view over the lake.

The room is not overly small and a large bed occupies most of the space. The furnishings add a touch of warmth while the dark mirror behind the bed gives the illusion of space. The windows with shutters block out any noise from outside.

Bathroom and Shower

The bathroom is average in size and in need of some renovation. It has the toilet and bidet on one side and a very small shower by Australian standards.

Wifi in the rooms is available at additional cost. I ask the concierge for the rates and he tells me that internet access is free if I sit in the lobby and connect via wifi or a lan cable.

Breakfast is not included in the rate but there are plenty of places to eat. Directly across the piazza, Pasticceria Monti on the corner serves anything from coffee, snacks, light meals and cocktails. With outdoor seating, it is a lovely spot to watch the world go by or your fellow diners.

Hotel Metropole Suisse, Lake Como - Imbarcadero

Imbarcadero Restaurant

The hotel has a bar where you can order drinks and enjoy them in the lobby. There is also a restaurant attached to the hotel. Imbarcadero Restaurant is a fine dining establishment set in a formal salon with a convivial ambience. We had a memorable dinner there one evening and enjoyed regional specialities. (future review)

As prices vary, it is best to check for the best rates on the internet and book in advance. We booked with Expedia as they had the best offer at the time. When our itinerary changed the week of our arrival, we emailed the hotel asking if we could have an extra night. They accommodated us at the same rate as the original booking.

We enjoyed our two night stay at Hotel Metropole Suisse in Lake Como and would return for a longer stay.
