For many years, David Jones, Australia’s oldest department store, heralds the arrivals of holiday season with its Christmas window display. The flagship store at Elizabeth Street in Sydney’s CBD takes on a different theme every year attracting an eager crowd of all ages.
Noses glued to the windows, palms resting against the glass, the little ones marvel at animated marionettes, elaborate Christmas trees in anticipation of the arrival of the big man in red.
This year, the theme is a gentle reminder of what Christmas is about, with scenes from popular Christmas carols such as The First Noel and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.
David Jones’ Christmas display may not rival the vitrines de Noel at Galeries Lafayette in Paris with glittering lights over multiple facades but it remains a Sydney tradition that puts a smile on many faces.

Fabulous window dressing. My favourite has to be the Ding Dong Merrily on High one. The monks in the bell tower are so cute.
Mine too! Love these monks, especially the two with the loaf of bread. Though the wine is missing! 🙂
Wow, that is some Christmas window display. No wonder people of all ages eagerly await it to see which theme it’s going to be. It must take them all year to prepare it.
It’s fun to watch people’s reactions when they first see the display. Like big kids 🙂
Wow, these look really well-made! Love the Ding Dong on High with the monks & mice – so much detail & really gets you into the spirit!
The mice are cute… but I can’t get past the monks!
Love these! Don’t these Christmas windows bring out the kid in all of us? I know I’ve had my nose mashed against a Christmas window or two this season.
It’s nice to feel like a kid once in a while 🙂
Oh my! I can’t wait to see all this! Of course, there’s decorations in Asia too, but not adorable and special like these!
I hope you get to see them before they take them out. I think they change the windows for the sale on the 26th…
THANK YOU for this little piece of home. LOVED reading this
