Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge: Bondi Beach 2011

On Australia Day, the Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge takes place where various Australian states compete in a world record attempt at the number of people on inflatable thongs joined in a line in the water.

The rising fog that swept the beach couldn’t deter the masses from flocking to Bondi Beach to participate in a fun day out and watch a sea of people slip onto giant thongs and float in the water. The fun even originated in 2006 along Coogee Beach and later moved to the north end of Bondi Beach.

The winner of the 2011 Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge, with a record of 2068 giant thongs, was Sydney.

  4. Ha! LOVE it! We had no idea they did this. Happy Australia Day (though a day late) from two fellow Aussies.

    • Cool, isn’t it? :) This is the second time I’ve been and it’s a lot of fun! Happy Australia Day to you both :)

  5. Really cool! When i first read the title of the post, I was a little confused about what exactly was happening. But, when I actually read the post and saw the pics, I thought “What a fun day at the beach!” (and great marketing on Havaianas’ part!)

    • I deliberately left out the translation (thongs = flip flops) in the spirit of keeping an Aussie flavour to the post ;) as my friend put it, it would be cool to have people wearing thongs/ g-strings, with thongs on their feet, riding those inflatable thongs! :D

  6. Looks like an excellent way to spend a day on the beach. Fun and creative event!
