The Sony Lounge: Vivid Sydney Pop Up Bar

The Sony Lounge is the latest pop up bar in Sydney, occupying a prime location at the Western Foyers of the Sydney Opera House. Part of the Vivid Sydney festival, the harbourside location offers visitors a chance to chill out in hip surrounds after watching the Lighting of the Opera House Sails or interacting with the 43 Vivid light installations.

You’ll find mythical figures, black lighting against white sheer curtains, a display of light and colour among vintage furniture pieces you’d like to take home. This is a fantasy setting for an elegant party complete with a dance floor, a disco ball and a piano on stage.

The bar menu is limited to six Belvedere Vodka cocktails at $12 a glass or $45 for a jug, and Grolsch Beer at $11. I order the Belvedere Pink Sparkle, made with pink grapefruit vodka, ruby red grapefruit juice topped with Chandon sparkling which has a nice balance of fruit to vodka.  Mr G chooses the Polish Lemonade, with citrus vodka, lemon juice and lemonade and finds it too sweet and diluted.

Both cocktails are packed with ice and served in paper cups and straws which takes the fun out of enjoying a drink in these fantasy-like surrounds.

The other side of the lounge has a DJ playing hip-hop music and offers a difference choice of beverages, from ready mixed drinks at $8 to premium spirits at $10. We order a couple of glasses of Chandon Brut NV sparkling and enjoy the olde-world comforts of a vintage lounge. At $10 a glass, it is served in plastic Chandon flutes and offers better value than an ice-packed cocktail in a paper cup.

For those who like a grand view of the Harbour Bridge with their drinks, there is an outdoor section with bar stools and another space with tables and chairs that was packing a small crowd under the warm glow of outdoor heaters.
