Hori Smoku: Sailor Jerry Event Night

Take a long-anticipated screening at a pop-up cinema, add cut-throat shaves by barbers, Rockabilly music and dancing, tattooing, flash art images and don’t forget lots and lots of spiced rum, and you have the making of a good Sailor Jerry party.

To celebrate the official launch of Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry on DVD in Australia, Curious Distribution screened the documentary-style movie  to a restricted guest list of die-hard fans.

The movie shows a compelling portrait of the life of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, the man who left his ink marks on numerous sailors who went on shore leave in Honolulu to get “Stewed, Screwed and Tattooed.”

Guests sipped on miniature Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and punch during the screening which revealed the man’s personality, wit and dark humour through a series of interviews with Mike Malone, Eddie Funk, Don “Ed” Hardy, and Lyle Tuttle.

The screening took place at Paramount Pictures in Surry Hills, a venue that was transformed into a pop-up movie theatre complete with two bars, a cart with hot dogs and pop corn. Afterwards, the party kicked on to the tunes of Pat Capocci and the band, the buzz of ink marking bartender skin, cut-throat shaves by barbers from Sterling Hair and a performance by the Sydney Roller Derby League.
