From the leafy suburb of Woollahra comes an exciting addition to the eclectic Sydney bar scene. One Moncur, which opened its doors last week is one of Sydney’s first champagne-focused bars.

Located at the site of the Phoenix Hotel along the Oxford Street end of Moncur Street, the new bar is a celebration of style and bubbles.

Brothers Luke and Jeremy Browne along with business partner Anthony Rosen have created an elegant champagne bar with a New York-London feel. The design takes some inspiration from the art deco features of the old Phoenix Hotel with graphic designer Henrietta Reed adding modern elements such as a graphic feature wall with champagne bottles. Gone are the pokies and any remnants of a pub. The revamped space exudes elegance and charm with an instant welcome that makes you feel like a regular.

Vines above the bar

Sit along the marble top bar beneath the illuminated vines and admire the bottles of prestige cuvées that line up the mirrored bar. The wine list offers over 30 champagnes by the bottle with an impressive selection of grandes marques and grower-made champagnes.

Six champagnes are offered by the glass with prices ranging from $14 (for non-vintage) to $28 (vintage). The selection will be on a rotational basis and the experienced team with sommelier Tristan Tomlinson can offer guidance and information on the various marques and vintages. You’ll also find a selection of local and international wines, including sparkling and a modest range of spirits.

Lounge seating

The food has a local focus with charcuterie from Victor Churchill in Woollahra. Sydney Rock oysters from Bay Rock are shucked to order at the bar and there is a selection of artisanal local and imported cheeses to be enjoyed.

The ethos at One Moncur is to make the enjoyment of champagne an accessible and fun experience. With its relaxed vibe, conversations are easy and the music is never intrusive with the occasional classic French song transporting you to a wine bar in Paris.
