Wolfgang Blass AM – Founder
During the formalities, a brief history of Wolf Blass Wines was presented, dating back to 1961 when Wolfgang Blass arrived in Australia from East Germany when the industry was still in its infancy, to the early days Wolf Blass wines and the “quality, character and consistency” that led to winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy and becoming a benchmark of the Australian wine industry.
From humble beginnings with a production of 2000 bottles of wines to 70 million bottles which are mostly destined to the export market in 47 countries, Wolf Blass is still no 1 in Australia. Speaking of the brand which was taken over by Treasury Wine Estate, the charismatic Mr Blass was passionate that “the corporation must not be allowed to drop its standards”.
At the conclusion of the speeches, Mr Blass or Wolfie as he is known in some circles, was presented with a birthday cake which has the emblematic eagle. Not losing sight of his personable character and sense of humour, he said, ” I hope when I get to my 80th birthday, there’s a cake and there’s a bird jumping out of the cake!”
Happy Birthday, Mr Blass and may all your wishes come true
