El Loco at the House: Pop-up Bar at the Opera House

Sydney summer has just turned a lot hotter with the arrival of El Loco at the House, a pop-up venue that brings the best of Merivale’s popular Surry Hills eatery to the foreshores of Sydney Harbour.

The Western Broadwalk of the Sydney Opera House is transformed into a Mexican cantina, with El Loco’s kitchen and bar serving up delicious tacos and margaritas. It’s fiesta time at the House, with colourful high stools set against share tables, wooden pallets and white canopies that make up the bar.

There’s a choice of three cocktails, all made with Espolon Tequila, from the Classic Margarita, to the Jalapeño Margarita and the Pink Cuco, El Loco’s famous slushie, all well-priced at $13.50.

The Jalapeño Margarita hits the right spot with the right balance of Espolon Reposado tequila, Cointreau, roasted jalapeño syrup and a wash of Illegal Mezcal for a slightly smoky finish.

El Loco’s famous tacos are on the menu, from the breakfast taco with chorizo, egg, guacamole and salsa verde to the secret taco, all priced at $6 with El Loco Hot Dog at $10. There’s even a kiddies menu and a sandpit to keep los niños amused.

After sunset, a DJ spins cool tunes which fill the night air and turn the sand pit into a dance floor as the fiesta continues into the late hours.

El Loco at the House is the perfect spot to chill with friends on hot summer nights, enjoy inexpensive and tasty food, knock back a couple of Coronas or sip on margaritas.

El Loco at the House is open daily from 10am until late and runs as a pop up from January 4 to 28, 2013.

Don’t miss our review of The Cove at the House, another Merivale pop-up champagne and cocktail bar at the Sydney Opera House.
