Brunch at Panama House, Bondi

Brunch. A weekend indulgence. A chance to sleep in after a big night then feast with friends over coffee and tasty fare. When it comes to Sunday brunch, Panama House knows how to pack the crowds.

Situated along Bondi Road near its older sibling, the Corner House and across the road from the Rum Diaries, the eatery is abuzz with patrons on a typical summer’s day. Beach gear, sarongs, shorts and thongs (flip-flops) feel at home on a Sunday in this eatery that serves breakfast, lunch at dinner.

Start with a coffee, or two, depending on your caffeine habit. If you need to kick start your late morning, choose the Panama Mary ($16), a take on the Bloody Mary with Stolen Gold Rum, Ruby Port, tomato juice, cucumber, lime, gumbo, jalapeno relish and tecate. She’s hot, spicy and delivers a good kick. If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, there’s the Spicy Tomato Juice ($6.50)

The breakfast/ brunch menu includes breakfast tacos with scrambled egg, spiced holy trinity and coriander sour cream ($10.50) and fried black pudding and green apple sauté ($18). But the  go-to dish is Huevos Rancheros ($16).

Corn tortilla with spiced black beans, smashed avocado, smoked tomato salsa, a perfectly poached egg and chipotle sauce make up this hearty and tasty dish shown above with an optional side of bacon ($4). The flavours are strong and you can supplement them with a choice of relishes ranging from the mild to the spicy.

When four friends order the same dish then debate doing it all over again, you know it’s that good. But then brunch is an indulgence, and who is to judge when you’re among friends.
