What to Do on Australia Day

On Australia Day, there’s more to do than hit the beach wearing our Australian flag cossies, slip our feet into thongs, slap on a temporary Southern Cross tattoo, eat Lamingtons and celebrate with a BBQ to show our national pride.

If you’re looking to do for something a little different, here’s our guide to adding an Aussie flavour to your day.

Australia Day

  1. The Havaianas Thong Challenge is taking place around Australia. Bondi Beach is hosting it in Sydney with other beaches around the county. Imagine a sea of thongs floating on the water, and that’s flip flops for you North Americans, not what we Aussies call a G-string.
  2. Sink a few Aussie beers at The Australian Heritage Hotel in the Rocks, an institution renowned for having over 120 Australia beers. Feeling peckish? They serve delicious kangaroo and emu pizzas with entertainment starting from 3pm. Can it get more patriotic than eating our national symbol?
  3. BBQs on Australia Day are like a national sport, with sausages, steaks, lamb and prawns (no, we don’t call them shrimps) sizzling on hot plates all around the country. If wine is your favourite tipple, choose from Wolf Blass Wines, Petaluma White Range, Jacobs Creek Reserve Wines, Omrah by Plantagenet from Western Australia, and the cheeky Saint and Sinner label.
  4. Have a dry Martini at sunset made with an Australian spirit. There’s Moore’s Vintage Dry Gin from Distillery Botanica in Erina on the Central Coast, the Cutlass Gin from West Winds Gin which has bush tomatoes and comes from Western Australia and 666 Pure Tasmanian Vodka.
  5. Alternatively, have a go at making Sails in the Sunset, an Australia Day cocktail that we’ve created.
  6. Enjoy freshly-shucked oysters washed down with Australian Prosecco from Dal Zotto Wines in Victoria.
  7. Make the most of Sydney’s Pop-up Bars at the Opera House before they close this long weekend. There’s El Loco at the House serving tacos, Margaritas and Coronas, The Cove at the House for champagne and sparkling and Pelicano at Bennelong. There is nothing more romantic than drinking in the views of our harbour and appreciating the city we live in.
  8. Finish the night with an Australian Whisky and support our growing industry. Choose from Lark Whisky, Limeburners, Sullivans Cove, Nant, Hellyers Road Distillery and Overeem to name a few.

And have a Happy Australia Day!
