Summer of Riesling Laneway Tasting

Music, food and Riesling wines came together on a festival atmosphere for the Summer of Riesling Laneway Tasting. The street art lined Nithsdale Lane behind the Oak Barrel heaved with visitors, eager to taste, discover new Riesling wines and chat with some of the winemakers.

Over 50 wineries were represented with over 100 Rieslings on taste resulted in a sold-out event with limited tickets available on the day. There were many notable drops from Australia and Germany, highlighting the diversity of the grape and the various regions in which the wine is produced.

The Matison Riesling from Orange was among the favourites, as well as Brown Brothers Limited Release Riesling, with Moorilla Muse Museum Release 2007 as the standout from the wines tasted.

Fishheads offered freshly-opened Cloudy Bay Clams for tasting by Daniel of Fork ‘n’ Knife. The delicious clams are eaten raw from the shell with a few drops of lemon juice –  a taste of the sea that can become addictive. Food was also supplied by Longrain with a suckling pig from Saskia Beer served with lemongrass, kaffir lime and coconut cream. Other dishes included, Ma Hor, with caramelised pork, prawn and peanuts on sour pineapple, and snapper with green papaya salad, cashews and red chilli.

The Summer of Riesling Laneway Tasting was held on Sunday 10 February 2013. Tickets to the event cost $25 with unlimited tastings and a $5 voucher redeemable on the day for food or Riesling wines from event partner, the Oak Barrel.
