La Lupita, Canterbury

Update June 2013: This pop-up is now closed and has relocated to La Lupita at the Basement

Step through the unassuming entrance to La Lupita in Canterbury, and you’ll find yourself in a world far removed from the barren streetscape outside. The smell of sizzling meat on charcoal greets you on arrival, along with the image of Guadalupita, the Day of the Virgin from which La Lupita takes its name.

La Lupita is a pop up Taquería from Owner Attila Yilmaz, a funky venue that combines Al Carbón food truck with live music and performances from resident Mariachi, Victor Valdes. Al Carbón means “cooked on charcoal” and for the launch of 961 Beer in Sydney, La Lupita  hosted a Mexican-Lebanese fiesta, with brewer Mazen Hajjar in attendance, pairing Mexican food with 961 Lager, 961 Red Ale and the all-original and food-friendly 961 Lebanese Pale Ale.

Hot chicken wings ‘Al Carbón with chipotle, signature meatballs with a piquant sauce topped with stringy cheese, charros beans chiltepil y crema mexicana, pork y roast pineapple tacos and cheese stuffed japaleno peppers featured on the menu with salsas taking on a Middle-Eastern flavour with tahini sauce, taking you back to the delicious street food of Beirut.

La Lupita succeeds in creating a casual party atmosphere in friendly surrounds where flavour takes centre stage. The grill and the tortilla dispenser are a marvel to watch. No matter how busy it gets with a long line-up of people, Attila and his friendly team make the time to engage while preparing food, slicing meat and serving customers. And that’s ample reason for serious food lovers to make the trip out to the suburbs.
