Step into Sugar Lounge in Manly and you’re transported to a Tiki Bar and lounge that belongs at an island resort. A thatched bar, intimate tables and chairs and a long banquette set against a tropical island mural complete the décor.
Sugar Lounge, Manly
Sugar Lounge is situated along North Steyne opposite Manly Beach, and it’s just another day in paradise according to the sign above the hula dancer doll at the bar.
Bar Ceiling
On a cold and wet Saturday night, the venue is almost at full capacity with people relaxing over a drink or dining on a selection of share plates and pizza.
Another Day in Paradise
The rum-focussed bar has approximately 120 expressions from around the world including some rare collections such as Ron Cartavio Solera 12 yo from Peru, Zafra Masters Reserve 21 yo from Panama and Lemon Hart from Jamaica.
Rum Collection
The cocktail list includes Tiki drinks such as Piña Colada, Mai Tai and Dark ‘n Stormy. The Pain Killer ($16), a mix of Myers dark rum, coconut syrup, pineapple and orange juice topped with grated nutmeg is served in a Tiki mug. Take one sip and the flavour evokes memories of island holidays in the sun.
The Zombie Cocktail
The Zombie is an excellent choice and Sugar Lounge’s most popular cocktail. Made according to a secret house recipe, it has five rums and absinthe which is flamed in a glass and poured flaming into a passionfruit garnish. The cocktail celebrates the flavour of rum with a hint of absinthe on the finish. Close your eyes, and you can almost feel the warmth and sand in your toes.
L-R: The Zombie Cocktail, The Pain Killer
Sugar Lounge serves breakfast and brunch daily and the share plates carry the tiki theme with dishes such as Island Grill Burger ($19) and Beachside Fish and Chips ($21). There is a choice of seven pizzas and daily specials.
The venue has live music from Wednesday to Saturday ranging from various live bands, resident DJs and a house band on Saturday.
Island Mural
Sugar Lounge is a casual beachside venue in which to enjoy fun cocktails with friends or grab a bite to eat. The vibe is chilled in the evening and attracts a cross section of age groups on a night out. With its prime location opposite the beach, and a portable bar on tiki Sundays, it’s the closest you having a tropical island escape without the jetlag.
