The Malaya Restaurant, Sydney

In the days of restaurants lasting no more than two months, The Malaya has much cause to celebrate. This year marks their 50th anniversary and to celebrate, the restaurant hosted a cocktail and canapé party to thank its loyal customers for their ongoing support.

More than 300 guests enjoyed a selection of wine, champagne and fruity cocktails as well as canapés from the restaurant’s kitchen with Chef Mustapa Jaffar at the helm.

The restaurant which is now located along Sydney’s King Street Wharf began in 1963 with Mr Wong Tai See’s vision to create a unique Southeast Asian dining experience. Considered a pioneer of Southeast Asian cuisine in Sydney, he shipped in numerous spices from Singapore including dried chillies and ground turmeric, chilli and curry powders, which were not available in Australia at the time.

The Malaya began trading at rented premises at 787 George Street Sydney. In the early 1980’s, his son, Lance Wong, took over management of the restaurant in and later bought and renovated it with  a more contemporary look before it was relocated to its current position at 39 Lime Street, King Street Wharf.
