There’s no stopping the dynamic team at Emmilou. After opening Bar Lou Lou, a small bar within a tapas bar, owner Chris Cranswick-Smith and Bar Manager, Alex Carter have launched Hollywood and Vine, an American style burger joint operating as a pop-up during summer.

Emmilou’s terrace that is popular with late night sippers and diners is transformed during the day into a diner with red and white checkered tablecloths and a touch of Americana throughout.

Hollywood and Vine draws its inspiration from the famous Tom Waits’ song, Heart Attack and Vine, which references the famous corner of Hollywood and Vine streets in Los Angeles. A clever neon sign of the name gives the illusion of the criss-crossing street signage and leads onto the counter for ordering.

The menu is kept simple and accessible with a choice of five burgers at $10 each, sides at $5 and sweets at $8, with a takeaway option.

A concise wine list gives the experience a boozy focus. There are ‘Cranswick’ wines, a delicious primitivo-based rose from Kangarilla Road and Extra Brut from Argentina. American beer includes the popular Pabst Blue Ribbon and Brooklyn Lager. Non alcoholic drinks such as shakes and soda fridge are available.

The burgers are the stars of the menu, drawing a little influence from pop culture. The Royale with Cheese has proved a popular choice on the first day of opening. Sink your teeth into a delicious soft brioche bun and a tender beef patty with three cheeses, a double brie, cheddar and an American cheese. The sun-dried tomato paste is a tasty addition and the pickles are made in-house.

The Big Pig Burger includes the famous 16 hour pork belly with pork shoulder, apple slaw and chipotle mayo while Silence of the Lamb is a tempting choice with tender lamb cooked for 8 hours, served with chicken liver that melts into the burger, fava beans and a hommous topping.

The Krabby Patty is a fresh and zesty alternative with crab cake, avocado, coriander, lime and chilli and vegetarians are catered for with The Lincoln, a sweet potato patty, chickpeas, cumin, cucumber and yoghurt.

Americana in Surry Hills

Hollywood and Vine brings a touch of Americana to the heart of Surry Hills. It operates on weekdays only from 11am to 4pm before the venue is transformed into Emmilou and Bar Lou Lou from 5pm. The pop up is trading during summer until the end of January, but we hope it will become a permanent addition to the Surry Hills lunch scene.
