The Push Bar, The Rocks Sydney

After extensive renovations, The Push has opened in The Rocks with a theme inspired by the area’s heritage. Tucked beneath the Russell Hotel in the Rocks, the space was previously known as The Russell Wine Bar. The name is derived from The Rocks Push, a notorious group in the early 1800’s which terrorised both The Rocks and the sailors in the area.

The intimate split level venue is dimly-lit and adorned with bright copper piping that runs around the bar area. Leather banquettes beneath vintage lamps at the back invite intimate conversations over a tipple and a bite to eat. Old prints decorate the walls and bring a historical touch of yesteryear.

The Push is branding itself as a small bar and offers cocktails ($16 each) that are divided into Classics and Signature. From the Classics come the likes of the Mojito, Margarita, Caprioska and Negroni. The Martini is offered with a choice of “vodka or gin, wet or dry, twisted or dirty, shaken or stirred” but a dry gin Martini with a twist comes a little on the wet side. Signature Cocktails bear names that are inspired by the Push’s history. The signature Push Over pays tribute to the elegant women who were charmed by members of The Push in the 1800′s and is a fruity mix of raspberries, lime, Chambord and vodka. Pamalove continues the feminine theme with PAMA pomegranate liqueur, Tanqueray gin and passionfruit with a hint of lychee. The Larrikin, a mix of Jack Daniels, Tuaca, lime and mint topped with ginger ale is very light on spirit and doesn’t live up to its name.

A modest selection of bottled beer, cider and wines by the glass ($7 to $10) and the bottle is on offer. Heineken, White Rabbit White Ale, Little Creatures Pale Ale, Endeavour Vintage Beer and Growers Golden Ale are on tap.

The food menu by Head Chef Dean Barlow continues the theme with a mix of Americana, British Pub and Australian favourites. Counter Snacks include Scotch Egg with Sauce Gribiche ($7) and Gourmet Sausage Roll ($7). The Reuben Plate ($19) is good to share and comes with a DIY approach on a wooden board with slices of house-poached corned beef, cabbage slaw, Swiss cheese, gherkins, rye bread and mustard. Burgers and sandwiches include a Kangaroo herbed mince patty with damper roll ($18) and the Fortune Burger ($16).

From the main course, the Shepherd’s Pie ($16) with peas and mash makes good winter tucker and the generously-portioned Pappardelle with lamb ragout ($16), gremolata and garlic sourdough is rich and comforting with tender and flavoursome lamb.

Dessert tempts with the Jaffle bread and butter pudding ($8) with dark chocolate custard and salted caramel but was not available on the night. The Ice Cream with crumbed ANZAC ($6) and macadamias is saved by the sweet rum butter sauce.

The Push is aiming to be a small bar but is in essence an intimate and beautifully renovated pub in the historic Rocks area. The venue has an inviting modern fitout, welcoming staff and satisfying pub fare that is served fast. If you’re a regular frequenter of Sydney’s small bars, don’t expect it to be the same. But if you’re looking for a small pub in which to enjoy a drink as a couple or a few ales with mates, The Push is a welcome addition to The Rocks.
