England London Restaurants Travel

Salon, Cannon & Cannon, Brixton London

Tucked upstairs from the charcuterie and cheese shop of Cannon & Cannon in London’s Brixton is a true hidden gem. Salon offers casual dining with a strong focus on British produce, many sourced from or around Brixton.

The décor is pared back with tables and chairs in dark timbers, a neutral colour scheme and wine barrels at the bar. The restaurant has instant appeal particularly to travel foodies and can easily be at home in Sydney’s inner city suburbs.

Start with a local craft beer as you peruse the concise but tempting menu by Head Chef (at the time of visit) Nicholas Balfe of Brunswick House Café. You can leave yourself in the hands of the chef for a four course Set Menu for £29 per person on evenings and weekends with £25 for accompanying wines. The chefs take the guess work out of ordering or you can choose from the a la carte menu.

Dishes vary with the seasons and you can expect the likes of snacks and charcuterie such as Pancetta from Hackney Wick, ‘Nduja Croquettes and Aioli as starters. Share plates include Mackerel Soused in Brixton Ginger Beer, Rhubarb, Horseradish and Braised Mutton, Salisfy, Pickled Red Currants. Finish with a British Cheese Board or Goat’s Curd with Pickled Figs, Honey and Thyme.

On your way out, don’t forget to stop at the shop downstairs at Cannon and Cannon for some of the best charcuterie in England. And if you can’t get to Brixton, they have a stall at the Borough Market offering with an extensive range.

Salon is an intimate venue that gets busy fast so it is best if you book in advance.
