Flor de Cana 25 YO Rum

Flor de Caña Rum launched their 25 yo expression in Sydney at The Lobo Plantation. Hailing from Nicaragua, the rum is distilled on the west side of the country which has good soil for sugar cane which imparts a richer flavour.

Flor de Caña are not blenders showcasing a product, they produce their own molasses and own the sugar cane fields.

The rum is column distilled using 3 column stills where the spirit undergoes 4 to 5 distillation cycles. The spirit is matured in 180 litre ex American white oak casks from Jack Daniel’s. What makes Flor de Caña 25 yo rum stand out is that it is not a blended rum of various ages but 100% single vintage. No artificial flavours or caramel colouring are added and there is no infusion of wood chips in the rum.

In the glass, Flor de Caña 25 yo has a deep amber hue. On the nose, there are caramel, vanilla, bitter almonds and soft oak aromas. The palate is dry, not as heavily oaked as you’d expect from a 25 yo. The wood notes are balanced along with caramel, vanilla and bitter almonds. Complex but lacking viscosity on the palate, it finishes sharp and dry with gentle oak.

If you’re expecting a sweet sugary bold aged rum, this isn’t the one. Flor de Caña 25 yo delivers on complexity and flavour without the big hit of oak and chewy tannins on the finish.
