How to Pair Whisky & Cheese with Glenmorangie at Opera Bar

The Opera Bar held the second in their Sunset Tasting Series featuring Whisky and Cheese in their Meat and Cheese room.

The series pairs the same local artisan cheeses throughout the series against a different range of whiskies for each masterclass. This allows you to taste the different expressions and see how they work with the cheese on taste and decide which combination works best for you.

The second master class featured the whiskies of Glenmorangie presented by Moet Hennessy’s Brand Ambassador Garth Foster and from the Meat and Cheese Room, Henry a.k.a. The (self professed) Cheese Nerd presenting these artisan cheeses with the two giving their reasons for the chosen pairings.

Here is an overview of the pairings:

Whisky & Cheese Pairing
Glenmorangie Original, Mountain Man Washed Rind

The fruit sweetness of the Glenmorangie Original cut through the fattiness of its cheese pairing of the Mountain Man Washed Rind.

Whisky & Cheese Pairing
Glenmorangie Lasanta, Vanella Buffalo Mozzarella

The sweetness, from its finishing in sherry casks, of the Glenmorangie Lasanta made for a flavour contrast to the slight saltiness of the Vanella Buffalo Mozzarella with the cheese being a perfect neutral palate cleanser.

Whisky & Cheese Pairing
Glenmorangie Quinta Rubin, Shaw River Annie Baxter Hard

The Glenmorangie Quinta Rubin with its aromas and flavours of dark mint chocolate made for a perfect match with the Shaw River Annie Baxter Hard, a pecorino/romano style buffalo cheese.

Whisky & Cheese Pairing
Glenmorangie Nectar D’or, Woodside Lemon Myrtle

The lemon citrus notes and honeycomb of the Glenmorangie Nectar D’or made for a symbiotic match with the Woodside Lemon Myrtle, a fresh goat curd cheese that is light in flavour and texture, with lemon myrtle covering the surface.

Whisky and Cheese Pairing
Glenmorangie Milsean, Ashgrove Cloth-Aged Cheddar

Glenmorangie Milsean exhibits aromas and flavours akin to an old fashioned sweet shop matched which come together with the nuttiness and salt of the Ashgrove Cloth-Aged Cheddar with its crumbly texture.

The Sunset Series Whisky and Cheese Masterclass start at 6pm and go for approximately two hours with guests receiving:

  • A whisky based cocktail on arrival
  • A minimum of four whiskies on taste, each matched with a local artisan cheese
  • Light snacks and canapés from Opera Bar are served throughout the session
  • A whisky based cocktail on conclusion
  • Whisky and Cheese tasting notes and a small gift to take home

The next Sunset Series Whisky Masterclass will be held on Monday 20 June featuring whiskies from John Dewar and Sons presented by Bacardi Brand Ambassador Loy Catada.
