Sips & Bites #2: Sugarcane Coogee, Hacienda Sydney, Balcon by Tapavino, Tang Hui & more

Sips & Bites is a new section featuring bite-sized information on new restaurants and bars including what’s on in Sydney. This new feature replaces the monthly “New Restaurant and Bars Openings” and is published on a regular basis.

Sugarcane Coogee

Sugarcane Restaurant (pictured) by Chef and owner Milan Strbac has opened in Coogee Beach with a menu featuring a similar shared concept to the Surry Hills venue but with more seafood options to reflect the new beachside location. The venue has been given Asian-style beach house with bamboo and timber finishes and the cocktail menu by Flynn McLennan (Uncle Ming’s, Kagura) features Asian inspired cocktails available until 12am. Balcon by Tapavino

The team from Bar Tapavino in Bulletin Place have opened a new casual dining, Spanish style restaurant. Like its older sibling, Balcon by Tapavino has an impressive wine list and food menu to match divided in tapas, primera, sea, land, and a charcuterie section featuring jamon including the coveted jamon iberico de bellota “pata negra”.

Tang Hui Sydney

Tang Hui Restaurant has opened inside the World Square Shopping Centre occupying the former site of the luxurious China Republic. The restaurant is headed by chef Ziquan Li and the specialty of the house is the Peking duck.

New vista bar Hacienda is opening soon at Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour, a collaboration between Applejack Hospitality (owners of  Bondi Hardware, The Butler and Della Hyde) and AccorHotels. The bar is inspired by the grand plantation architecture of Cuba, mixed with the lux yet playful modern vintage hotels of 1950’s Miami. More on Hacienda bar Sydney here.

Salt Meats Cheese Patisserie

Salt Meats Cheese are launching a new Patisserie. The new bakehouse, located at SMC’s Alexandria location will open to the public on the 1st of August and offer an array of fresh breads, cakes and delicious sweet treats.

Mere Retail & Cafe Bondi

Mere Retail & Cafe has opened in Bondi. Banh Mi is their offering with three options: garlic infused slow cooked pork shoulder with crispy crackling crumbs, lemon & rosemary free range slow roast chicken, pan seared sesame crusted tofu. The bread is baked fresh every morning from a local Vietnamese bakery, and you can get Vietnamese coffee filtered traditionally to make ca phe sua da/Vietnamese style iced coffee, plus fresh juices.

Friday 5 August is International Beer Day. Dove & Olive, Keg & Brew in Surry Hills, and the DOG Hotel in Randwick, will be celebrating by donating 100 per cent of the proceeds from special craft beer sales to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.

James Squire Hop Thief 8

James Squire has released Hop Thief 8, a new edition of their American Pale Ale made usingwith fresh hops from the previous year’s harvest. The beer has spice and floral aromas, has a little more bitterness than the previous years and is a lighter-coloured brew. Available from mid-August.

Italian Wine + Food Festival – Sydney

The Italian Wine + Food Festival is back in August where you can taste 200 of Italy’s finest wines (including Italian-centric Aussie wines), meet winemakers and importers. The event is on Sunday 21st August 2016, 11am – 9pm at Sydney Town Hall. Tickets can be purchased here.

Good Food & Wine Show Sydney

The Good Food & Wine Show is back in Sydney running over three day from 5 to 7 August at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park. Chefs Alastair McLeod, Gary Mehigan, Miguel Maestre, Matt Moran, along with Sammy & Bella will be there and you can watch demonstrations, participate in a master class, and enjoy treats from over 200 food and drink exhibitors.
