Named after the Raymond Chandler novel, The Long Goodbye is a new cocktail bar that has opened in Darlinghurst.
The Long Goodbye
Located at the site that was previously The Hazy Rose, the bar by Flynn McLennan of Kagura in Surry Hills combines a film noir theme with inventive twists on classics and a focus on house-made liqueurs, bitters and infusions.
Elegant Interiors
The elegant interior evokes the comforts of a home setting of yesteryear with vintage furniture in dark brown and timber tones, elegant wallpaper, and flickering candles on silver candelabras.
Vintage Furniture
There are cosy corners in which to relax and a small dining table to huddle around.
Chaise Longue
A chaise longue at the back invites cosy conversations over classic cocktails under the mood lighting and period music.
The Long Goodbye Bar
Don’t be surprised if you don’t see a cocktail menu. The Long Goodbye offers what is essentially an old school cocktail bar service. You’d be very tempted to leave the choice to the capable team after a quick glance at the back bar. You’ll find an eclectic mix of spirits, some well known, others awaiting to be discovered. On one side of the bar, you’ll see bought spirits and modifiers, and the other house-made liqueurs using an ultrasonicator, amari and bitters that stand out in their glory.
Flynn McLennan
Most of the house-made modifiers are made in an ultrasonicator, an ultrasonic machine with vibrations that create infusions while keeping the brightness of the ingredients. You’ll find a date and walnut liqueur, a vibrant blood orange liqueur that tastes like marmalade and one of the best ginger liqueurs we have ever tasted.
You’d be encouraged to tell the bartenders what you feel like drinking and they will create a drink to your taste. The key is that old school interaction and to make it work, they have ensured that all staff working at the bar or on the floor are bartenders.
Strawberry Blonde
House cocktails include the Strawberry Blonde, a take on the Ramos Gin Fizz with gin, house-made strawberry liqueur with lemon butter, egg white and soda. Creamy, fruity and a little on the sweet side to get you started.
The Long Goodbye
The namesake of the bar, The Long Goodbye is a take on the Southside cocktail with Mezcal, lime syrup prepared in the sous vide method. It gives the drink vibrancy and a sherbet like character. This is a cocktail to enjoy at the bar or sitting back on the chaise longue.
Dante Sour
The Dante Sour is an exceptional drink that brings together rye whiskey with house-made black sesame infused honey, house-made ginger liqueur, lemon juice shaken with egg white. The drink combines spice notes from the rye whiskey, honey sweetness balanced with the fresh bite of ginger, citrus and nuttiness from the black sesame. Remarkably easy sipping and delicious to the last drop.
The Long Goodbye is a cocktail bar that makes you feel right at home from the first visit. Whether you’re a small group dropping in for an after work drink, settling in for a Sunday session with friends, or a couple looking for a bar with a touch of romance and nostalgia, The Long Goodbye ticks all the right boxes. And if you happen to be a bar fly interested in cocktail culture and original libations, you’re in for a real treat.
