Juanita’s

The fitout features lush plantation style and pays tribute to the historic structure of the building, the original sandstone walls but with heavy, luxe finishes. Timber, rattan and greenery feature, along with a cosy fireplace.

Named after one of Victoria Streets most famous former residents, journalist Juanita Nielsen, believed to have been kidnapped and killed for her anti-corruption campaign which saved the very building The Butler and Juanita’s occupy from greedy developers in the 70’s.

Right On Thyme

The seasonal cocktail menu at Juanita’s is succinct with a focus on on Ibero flavours. Think Pisco, tequila and tropical fruit, a solid wine list and bites from the kitchen downstairs.

Right On Thyme ($18) is the ideal aperitif with Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin, apricot brandy, lemon, thyme, aquafaba, topped with sparkling wine. It’s light, sparkling and fruity while preserving the delicate flavours of the Shiraz Gin.

Crackerjack

Crackerjack ($18) is a take on the famous Penicillin cocktail but with Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila, Laphroaig 10 yr, lime juice, agave and ginger topped with cracked pepper. It’s a light and refreshing sour style of drink with a hint of smoke on the finish. The black pepper works well to add spice and cuts through some of the sweetness.

The cocktail list which changes seasonally is from lightest to heaviest using fresh juices and fresh coffee from a machine at the bar. After dinner options such as the Highland Flower with whisky, sloe gin, and hibiscus, and Smoke and Chocolate with Mezcal, creme de cacao, lime, orgeat and orange bitters.

When visiting The Butler, allow time to discover Juanita’s or pop in midweek for a date night or a catch with with friends.
