Book Review: Around the World in 80 Cocktails

Around the World in 80 Cocktails by Chad Parkhill is a celebration of the global history of the cocktail starting from the early 19th century through to the 21st with illustrations and colourful tales behind the drinks.

The book starts with an introduction, including how to make syrups before it goes into cocktail making techniques such as shaking, stirring, staining and garnishing a drink, all explained simply.

Around the World in 80 Cocktails is a combination of colourful illustrations with a retro look and feel, coupled with a brief history of the cocktail and the recipe. Fancy a Mojito in Havana Cuba, a Sherry Cobbler in Jerez, or a Gin & Tonic in India? The story of each cocktail comes with an easy-to-follow recipe, including classics and some new recipes.

Australia is represented with the Rhubarb Fizz from Tim Philips of Bulletin Place in Sydney, the Mesha Cocktail from The Bowery in Brisbane and the Midori-based Japanese Slipper from Mietta in Melbourne.

Author Chad Parkhill is a writer and bartender based in Melbourne, Australia and is currently the cocktail columnist for the Guardian Australia. His work has appeared in The Australian, The Lifted Brow, Kill Your Darlings, Meanjin, and The Quietus, among others.

Illustrator Alice Oehr is a designer from Melbourne, Australia whose distinct, colourful style incorporates her love of food, pattern, collage and drawing. Her designs have made their way into textiles, homewares, magazines, books, and even a series of six-foot-tall Ancient Egyptian statues for a marquee at Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Around the World in 80 Cocktails is published by Hardie Grant Books and is available in hardback at RRP $29.99.
