The inaugural Gin The Show took place on the weekend at the Stamford Plaza in Mascot. And what a show it was!
A quick tour around the venue revealed a significant number of gins we hadn’t tasted before, a testatment to the organisers and the diversity of gin. Of course, some favourites were present such as Never Never Gin, Green Ant Gin, Garden Tiger Gin, Fords Gin, Hendrick’s Gin just to name a few.
Here are our top 10 picks from Gin The Show summarised in no particular order:
- Garden Tiger Limited Edition Gin (47% ABV) – aged to taste in chestnut wood that previously held apple eau de vie (yes, we had to read it again)
- Death’s Door Gin (47% ABV) – how a simple mix of three botanicals, juniper berries, coriander and fennel seeds produces a big bold Martini style gin
- Animus Arboretum Gin (50% ABV) – savoury, herbaceous gin with capsicum and bush tomato, recent Champion Australian Small Batch Spirit ADSA 2018 awards
- Herno Sloe Gin (30% ABV) – a delicious sipper, on ice, with almond notes
- Apothecary Gin (40% ABV) – a softer style of gin that isn’t too juniper forward followed by subtle citrus
- Fishers Gin (44% ABV) – slightly sweet upfront with a maritime note on the finish
- Musgrave Gin (43% ABV) – from Capetown, South Africa, African spices at the fore of this delicious gin. Keep an eye out for their Pink Gin, infused with rose water.
- Giniversity Botanical Gin (42% ABV) – fresh, floral and fruity with a hint of eucalypt
- Manly Spirits Barrel Aged Gin (45% ABV) – the same Manly Spirits Dry Gin aged for 7 months in ex bourbon casks that previously held Sullivans Cove whisky and a splash of 6 months old “whisky” maturing in French oak
- Knocklofty Penn Gin (40% ABV) – the soft juniper upfront leads to Asian spice notes with lemongrass, Thai basil and Tasmanian pepperberry.
