A long painted mural with cheeky art gives the small bar a cool and casual vibe. A gallery at the back offers a free space for local artists to exhibit their work on a fortnightly basis.
The drinks list includes a range of beers, cider and cocktails. Choose from Sin City ($16) from The Lucky 7, combining Zubrowska vodka and apple juice with Cointreau and orange marmalade spiced up with cinnamon. Alternatively, indulge in the Deadly Sins cocktails, such as Envy ($16), made with muddled pear and lime, with green tea and Green Fairy absinth, or the Wrath ($14), a mix of tequila, Cointreau, with smashed lemon grass, ginger and chilli.
Black Penny, the Bar
Head chef Paul Bryan, formerly of Longitude 131 (Uluru) has created a sharing menu with a range of bar nibbles and share plates. Choose from the delectable Beef Roll Ups ($12) with grass-fed beef carpaccio with green herb salad and truffle dressing, the Fish’n’Chips ($12) with lemon and dill barramundi stuffed inside crumbed and thick cut chips with a citrus aioli, the must-have Many Mushrooms ($12) with portobello mushrooms stuffed with shiitake, Swiss brown, woodier and porcine or the addictive Surry Fried Chicken ($11) with a smoked paprika dipping sauce. Wash it down with a range of beers including Young Henry’s, the Balmain Brewing company and the Hills Cider Company.
Black Penny fuses food and drink with art and culture with local DJs, 3 piece bands and solo artists performing from Thursday to Sunday. With its buzzy vibe, casual feel and numerous offerings during happy hour, the vibrant bar is set to strengthen the Surry Hills small bar scene.
