Tucked behind Sydney’s St James station, you’ll find Metro St James, a quaint café that plays on the romance of the Paris métro.
Housed in a heritage-listed sandstone building, the bistro has a pleasant leafy outlook and overlooks the chess corner of Hyde Park. The cafe-bistro is a venture from the team behind La Brasserie in Crown Street with Philippe Valet and chef David Bransgrove.

A combination of alfresco and indoor dining make this casual eatery a hub for the ebb and flow of locals, city workers and tourists. Here, French accents are thick and the bistro fare serves a breakfast and lunch menu as well as bar snacks.
Croque Madame
Breakfast has an egg and sourdough focus and includes Croque Madame ($16.50), served sandwich style with very generous sourdough bread and topped with a fried free-range egg. The Café Lunch menu kicks off at noon and carries the theme with giant toasted sandwiches, including the Reuben ($17) with a not so generous filling of Wagyu corned beef, caraway sauerkraut, Swiss Gruyere, Russian dressing & dill pickle on sourdough.
The Reuben
Large salads include Pearl Couscous ($16.50) and Chicken Caesar Royale ($18.50). The Bistro Lunch ups the ante from the bread focus and onto mains such as ‘La Brasserie minute steak frites’ with Café de Paris butter and French fries ($28) and wagyu burger ($25).
On Thursdays and Fridays, Metro St James opens till 9 pm and with Kronenbourg 1664 on tap, you can enjoy an apéro in the park.
