After a three months closure for major renovation, Taste of Shanghai has reopened in World Square.
The basement level restaurant has a new fit out by Giant Design who took inspiration from the streets of colonial Shanghai and lilongs, the winding backstreets of the city where co-owner Aaron Mi was raised.
Recycled brick, aged plaster, large Chinese screens, distressed toile wallpaper, and art deco pendants and mirrors give the venue an authentic look. A dim sim section adds an element of theatre with an open kitchen with live dumpling making in full view.
The menu at Taste of Shanghai is extensive and best explored in a group. Top picks are the Braised Bamboo Shoots, Pan Fried Pork Buns, Eggplant and Pork Mince in Sweet Chilli Vinegar, Mud Crab with Salty Egg Yolk and the excellent Fish Fillet in Sizzling Hot Sauce, swimming in chilli oil and red chillies. When it comes to dessert, the Sesame Rice Balls in Fermented Rice Soup are the top pick followed by the steamed Layered Red Date Cake.
Taste of Shanghai is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11 am to 10pm.
