Truffle Hunt with Secret Foodies

When you open a jar of truffles, let the aromas come to you. Just like perfume. Duncan Garvey of Perigord Truffles told a captive audience at the Truffle Hunt event with Secret Foodies and Alex Adams (Ms Darlinghurst).

Unlike previous Secret Foodies dinners, Truffle Hunt was an interactive cocktail style event set up like an indoor market on the premises of Kitchen by Mike. Foodies moved from one producer to the next, tasting and learning about the various produce and dishes from the producers themselves.

Truffle Hunt is a celebration of the beginning of the truffle season, Pierre Issa of Pepe Saya butter explained. and on taste was the most decadent butter of all, the Pepe Saya and Duncan Garvey truffle butter, the only fresh truffle butter in the world. Perigord Truffles were on sale at a cost of $2 a gram. A creamy polenta with a generous shaving of truffle and Parmesan was worth the queue, freshly-served piping hot from the kitchen.

Sitting on a generous serve of Pepe Saya crème fraiche, Yarra Valley Caviar was another special treat. John Susman of Fisheads explained that the salmon was “milked” the night before, a process where the fish is anaesthetised with clove oil and gently massaged to obtain the roe. Kinkawooka mussels were served, cooked in Pepe Saya butter and crème fraiche.

John Fairley of Country Valley Dairy in Picton, supplier to Pepe Saya, was on board for a chat on how he makes award-winning produce. David Lowe of Lowe Wines in Mudgee explained about his certified organic and biodynamic wines while guests enjoyed a range of his wines.

Merna Taouk of Dessertmakers (previously called Homemade Fine Foods) prepared a creamy, rich and delectable rice pudding made with truffles, and a delectable spread of her desserts put a sweet ending to the event.

Truffle Hunt was held at Kitchen by Mike in Rosebery on Thursday 26 June, 2013.
