Fergburger, Queenstown, New Zealand

There are certain things one does while travelling that defy normal behaviour. One such oddity is to stand in a queue at Queenstown’s Fergburger, at 1 am, after a five course dinner at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards to order a burger. The other, is to sit on a bench across the road from said burger joint, unwrap the prized burger and grab a quick photo while late night revellers give you the odd sideways glance.

Fergburger is a Queenstown institution which started in 2011 as a “hole in the wall” in Cow Street before it moved to the current premises at Shotover Street beside Ferg Baker. You can dine inside but during the late hours, you simply order from a window and eat it at one of the benches that line up the outdoor area. At 1 am on a Sunday, the queue is surprisingly short but then unlike Sydney, Queenstown parties until 5 am and the burger joint operates daily from 8.30 am until 5 am.

There are over 20 varieties of burgers with clever names such as The Codfather with fresh blue cod, Chief Wiggum with slow-roasted pork belly, Cock Cajun and Bun Laden with falafel patties. All are priced below $15 NZD with the exception of Big Al at $17.50 NZD that comes with half a pound of prime NZ beef and lashings of bacon, cheese and eggs.

Unwrapping the Southern Swine ($12.50 NZD) reveals a soft sesame seed topped bun, about 12 cm in diameter, with a tasty patty of prime New Zealand beef, American streaky bacon, tomato, red onion, avocado, aioli, tomato relish and a lettuce leaf poking out its tongue.

Is it a good burger? In fact, it’s very good, even at 1 am on a full tummy after a big dinner and easily joins the ranks of Chur Burger and Hollywood and Vine, both in Surry Hills. Is it the best in the world as some locals and visitors contest? It certainly deserves the reputation it has garnered making Fergburger a must-have experience when you’re in Queenstown.
