Deli Wine Bar, Surry Hills

Recently re-opened Deli Wine Bar, formerly The Red Door, is the downstairs bar of the revived Foveaux St Dining. The bar has two entrances, through the colourfully painted huge door with a neon sign on Sophia Street** or through the main entrance of the restaurant with the awe inspiring floor-to-ceiling wine racks.

Redesigned by Sydney-based design studio, Loopcreative, Deli Wine Bar has now transformed into a more grown-up venue. This chic bar with a warm and inviting environment has so much to offer, from wooden tables and chairs, dining booths, cyclone fence ceilings, sandstone walls, intimate lighting and music.

At the launch, guests enjoyed a choice of white, red or sparkling wines. Wines on the menu are served by half glass, glass and carafe and by the bottle. A simple food offering of bar snacks, such as cheeses sourced from around the world (from $6 per 50 gram), charcuterie (from $5 per 50 gram), pickles (from $5), breads and fruit breads (from $3). Everything is under $10 and available to order by the gram to either eat in or take away. Signature cocktails ($17), beer and cider (from $8) and spirits (from $8) are also available on the menu.

Chef and owner Darrell Felstead, explained, “In a strange way, closing the business was the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me see what’s important, re-evaluate my business and see what people really want from dining. I’m bringing it back to basics, to what food is and how it should be enjoyed. It’s keeping it honest, simple and fad free. What I’m passionate about is bringing people together over food and having a bit of fun with it, and that’s what the new restaurant/bar is all about.’

With the long term-term aim of having a late night licence, Deli Wine Bar is a new hub for great food and drinks in Surry Hills. It’s well worth a visit.

Gourmantic attended the launch of Deli Wine Bar on the 27th of November 2014.
