Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur from Sicily

Solerno blood orange liqueur from Sicily launched in Australia this week.

Beautifully packaged in a bottle inspired by Murano glass with the blushing colour of the fruit, the liqueur is an expression of citrus and sunshine.

Solerno is produced by Master Distiller Lesley Gracie, who has also created of Hendrick’s Gin. The spirit is  made from sanguinello blood oranges picked from sun-drenched groves on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. The fruit is processed within 24 hours at Agrumeria Corleone to maintain its freshness. The essential oil is blended with Sicilian lemon and a neutral spirit base then lightly sweetened with natural sugar.

The result is a layered, complex spirit (40% ABV) that starts with citrus notes of blood orange and lemon, balanced with a sweetness on the palate before finishing long and dry.

Jackie Patterson

Speaking at the media launch in Sydney, Solerno Brand Ambassador Jackie Patterson introduced the liqueur which was launched in 2009 in the USA and more recently in Italy. The name is a derivative of Salerno, a town in southern Italy and “sol” references the sun.

Sip neat in the style of limoncello, or use as a base spirit in classic cocktails such as Margarita or the refreshing signature Solerno and Sparkling (see recipe below) as an Italian-style aperitivo.

Solerno will be available from selected retailers later in the year at a RRP $70. In the meantime, keep an eye out for it at your favourite leading bars. Saluté!
